a community serving opportunity

There will be an announcement in the bulletin next Sunday about a simple community serving opportunity coming up on August 3rd and 4th. This idea came from Lynn in the form of the following email from her sister. Thought I’d share it here.

Hi all,

I am helping organize a project at my church and I was hoping you might all want to get involved. There is an incredible opportunity that is coming to my church. It’s called “Feed My Starving Children.” It’s an organization started by a Minneapolis business man. He was overseas and saw the incredible poverty and hunger around the world and decided he wanted to do something about it. He sought out scientists and food companies like General Mills and developed a meal that is nutritious, easy to assemble, and globally acceptable. These meals are now distributed to orphanages and Christian Outreach Centers around the world including, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Nicaragua, South Africa, Ukraine, Cambodia. Feed My Starving Children is permanently housed in Minneapolis, but they are trying to set up a permanent site in Naperville. Until they do, they look for sites around the area and they are coming to St. Daniel the Prophet parish in Wheaton on August 3 and 4th. They will bring a semi truck loaded with food and supplies. We are looking for help from other churches and organizations because we need 700-800 volunteers to package these meals. If we get all the volunteers we need, we could package 100,000 meals that weekend!!

My sister and my parents participated in this event at 2 separate churches in Naperville and raved about what an awesome experience it was—-powerful! My sister brought her whole family including kids ages 3-8 years and each of them had a job. She said the kids talked about it for weeks regarding how many children they helped feed and her family was much more aware of every mouthful of food they ate. My mom and dad went with their Christian community group and they all said how incredible the experience was and many of them went back a second day. They described praying over the food and cheering each other on as the meal packages were completed and goals were met. They felt that they really made a difference in ending hunger in the world.

This event will take place on Friday, August 3 and Saturday, August 4. 2 hour shifts are available on Friday from 9:30 am-9:00pm and Saturday from 8:00am-3:00pm. To register, you can email starvingchildren2007@yahoo.com or call Debbie Houlihanevent coordinator, at 630- 260-9031.

Thank you!

Sounds like a great opportunity to serve with friends and family. Thanks for the heads up Lynn.
