ray’s random thoughts: humility

Ray is PCC’s Senior Pastor.

Friends,

How is your Thursday going so far? Let me tell you about mine. In preparation for starting a new study series this Sunday [which we’re calling One80: Living the Xtreme], today I came across a number of Scripture texts that – well, in all honesty – smacked me upside my shiny bald head.

Why? Because humility represents a 180 degree turn from what is my natural human inclination. At the moment, I’m wrestling with the implication of these words for my own life, relationships and ministry. Just thought you might like to read what I’m reading.

  • You [God] save the humble, but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them low. 2 Samuel 22:28
  • God mocks proud mockers but gives grace to the humble. Proverbs 3:24
  • When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. Proverbs 11:2
  • “Heaven is my throne and the earth is my footstool. Where is the house you will build for me? Where will my resting place be? Has not my hand made all these things, and so they came into being?” declares the LORD. “This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word.” Isaiah 66:2
  • He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8
  • I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Ephesians 4:2
  • God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble…Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. James 4:6,10
  • God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:5-6

  1. It is great to read verses from different books of the bible and see the coherence of scripture. Talk about a man-made book 🙂

  2. Awesome passages! Everytime I ever hear that last one, as it was Katherine’s (my daughter, to those who do not know me) life verse, I am truly humbled myself. I know I fail that all too often, and I can only hope that God has mercy on me for asking him to instill that quality I struggle with all too often in my daughters…
