golden compass, sigur ros, and sister wynona carr

I love the sense when you’re on a road trip that you might find or discover something interesting or wonderful. We found a few gems tonight.

Maggie and I arrived in Effingham this evening around 6:00. It took some looking, but we found the local movie theater in time to watch The Golden Compass. We’ve been talking about the film- including its portrayal of the church- and I think there will be a post about it within the week. Some fascinating stuff there, just need to let it settle out a bit.

The highlight of the evening however was browsing through this dude’s table of CDs that he’d set up outside the theater. In addition to Sigur Ros’ album Takk, I also picked up this absolutely amazing album by Sister Wynona Carr, Dragnet for Jesus. They both set me back a total of $5.00. Most of Carr’s gospel songs were recorded in the late 40’s and early 50’s. Here’s the album cover:

Take a listen to this clip of the title cut from Amazon. Tell me that isn’t the most wonderful thing you’ve heard in a while. Who knows what treasures tomorrow holds?

I know it holds dry-rub ribs, unless something goes horribly awry.
