Danish artist Nadia Plesner created the following image for her Simple Living campaign in support of Darfur, Sudan. Lois Vuitton has asked that their bag be taken out of the image.
Plesner explains the image on her website,
My illustration Simple Living is an idea inspired by the medias constant cover of completely meaningless things. My thought was: Since doing nothing but wearing designerbags and small ugly dogs appearantly is enough to get you on a magasine cover, maybe it is worth a try for people who actually deserves and needs attention.
When we’re presented with the same images in the media over and over again, we might start to believe that they’re important.
There’s no questioning the provocative nature of the image. I find Plesner’s commentary on our celebrity fascination to be spot-on and I appreciate the creatively subversive nature of her art. But, given the information-overload we live with, does it accomplish anything? Does it matter whether it accomplishes anything?
