recommendations please

I’ve been off cereal for a few years now. No real reason, mostly cereals haven’t sounded good for breakfast.

Recently Maggie brought home some kind of bran crunchy thing from Trader Joe’s that I really like. Then this weekend, while visiting family in Iowa, I was reintroduced to Honey Nut Cheerios and Raisin Bran Crunch, two of my favorites from back in the day.

So, as I reenter the world of breakfast cereals, I need some recommendations. What’s out there that’s good? What’s a good day-in and day-out cereal? What about an indulgence for Saturdays?

No way do I want to wander aimlessly down the cereal aisle looking like a deer in the headlights.Β  So help a blogger out.Β  All recommendations will be seriously considered.

  1. Wow…I could probably live on breakfast cereal. And in college, I kind of did.

My current new favorite is what I call “Peace Cereal” – it has a global, ethical dimension to it (I know, I know, just what you want out of your breakfast cereal…)

    Here’s a link: http://www.peacecereal.com/index.html

I’ve only tried Wild Berry but its yummy…and…ethical?

  2. I LOVE cereal – and would eat it all the time if I could. I love Kashi Go Lean Crunch (and it is good for you), Zach likes Trader Joe’s Honey Nut cheerios, and Jeff eats the Trader Joe’s Organic High Fiber Os. We also have an open box of Trader Joe’s gorrilla munch and a box of Curves cereal.

  3. Mom’s homemade granola is the basic foundational supreme cereal. Yougurt, non-fat milk, fresh organic strawberries, chopped dates, sliced banana, peanuts and raisins (not all at once buddy) add all the variation necessary for most any palate. Sorry, gotta go feed the donkey. Dad

  4. Okay, I’ll go non-hippie here… πŸ™‚

For the saturday indulgence, nothing beats either Golden Grahams or Lucky Charms for me. Or if you like your sugar to also excoriate the insides of your mouth, Cap’n Crunch rules. πŸ™‚

But for the more wholesome, everyday stuff, I really like frosted wheats (mini or otherwise, although I prefer the larger ones). It’s all about the fiber, and it’s tasty. But not tasty to the point where you feel like you got all your calories for the day in your bowl. And honestly, Total is not all that tasty, but it honestly has all that good stuff for ya (vits and mins) in there…

    Hope that helps!

  5. Since you are at Trader Joes….
the bannana nut cluster cereal is awesome. Consumer Reports actually rated in #1 which is kinda wierd. I just got the cousin which is berry cluster cruch or something like that. Both good.

Wierd I have been lurking here for awhile and this post compells me to comment. 8>)

  6. Very nice suggestions folks. Who knew a cereal could have a website? Or that Consumer Reports rates cereal. I’m such a neophyte! But with expert advice such as this, how can I go wrong?

Oh, and I have to agree with my Dad that Mom’s granola is the best. Does it count as a hippie cereal if it’s homemade Larry?

  7. As my husband knows, I love cereal, especially as a bedtime snack. It’s so good to come home and feel like munching, and settle down with a nice bowl of cereal. I like flakes, and I really like to mix my cereals. Right now I’m mixing a fiber-ful flax flake with Honey Bunches of Oats, with a few dried blueberries tossed in. Delicious.

  8. “Does it count as a hippie cereal if it’s homemade Larry?”

dude… πŸ™‚ It’s like half the definition of it.

  9. The only way a cereal could be more hippie than if it was homemade, would be homemade from ingredients you grew yourself. πŸ™‚

  10. Cold Pizza from Rosati’s. (Doesn’t fit the criteria, but I like it.) KH
