music tidbits

On Saturdays I like to post some music, often in video form, but nothing really grabbed me this week. So instead, here are a few random music tidbits…

  • Sam Beam of Iron and Wine was interviewed and preformed a few songs live for Minnesota Public Radio last Wednesday. Lovely as always. Also, Beam will be touring with the Swell Season (as seen in the film Once) this fall. I’d be tempted to spend way to much money for that show.
  • Tickets for Lollapalooza in Chicago’s Grant Park are now on sale. I’d love to be there, but don’t think I can pull it off. Anyone planning on making it?
  • Anyone settled on what their album on the summer will be? While I’m enjoying Death Cab’s Narrow Stairs, I’m not sure it has the summer vibe. Last year’s album, much to Maggie’s chagrin, was Boys and Girls in America by The Hold Steady (wrote about it over at rednoW.com).

  1. It’s been out for a little bit now (couple of months) but I’m really digging KJ-52’s “The Yearbook” album.

It’s rap, and it’s silly at times (“You Hang Up First” has got to be one of the worst songs of any time…) but overall, the music is great to bump as you’re driving down the street on a sunny day.

But that’s if you like Christian rap of course. But, I also must say that between Grits, 4th Avenue Jones (my personal favorite Christian rap, because of their soulful efforts), KJ-52, and R-Swift, Christian rap has come a LONG way. It’s a shame that places like K-LOVE and stuff don’t play this kind of stuff (instead of their 10-song repeat queue, ad nauseam) because it would get a lot more young people into Christian music. Because, let’s face it, a lot of Xian music sucks. If your favorite music in the whole world comes from High School Musical, then okay, you’ll like the current famous roster of X-ian stars. But if you have a pulse, then you crave a little more substance. And rap seems to be the only avenue where I’m seeing innovation in the Christian music scene…

  2. New (old) summer music choice.

I happened upon a track from Toad The Wet Sprocket’s “Dulcinea” album tonight, and realized that I missed it greatly.

It still works, perhaps more so now than when it was released, due to the blossoming indie market with similar themes and styles (although the album itself is still very “produced”, but in a good way)….

If you haven’t heard it, listen. If you haven’t heard it in a while, listen.
