dobson and obama: related stuff

There would seem to be a bit of interest in the James Dobson/Barack Obama story that I posted about a couple of days ago. Here are a couple of additional items some of you may find interesting.

  • An article in Time that analyzes the backlash instigated by Dobson’s remarks. After years of attacking Democrats with relative impunity for their supposed moral failings, Evangelical leader James Dobson surely didn’t expect to suffer much of a backlash when he trained his sights on Barack Obama. Over the years, the party had practically cowered in fear and gone into radio silence when the head of Focus on the Family targeted one of its standard-bearers. So in a campaign that has already proved to be anything but predictable, the counterattack on Dobson this week epitomized the new, fraught political climate that Christian Right leaders like himself face.
  • Check out the website, jamesdobsondoesntspeakforme.com, that went up the day after Dobson’s broadcast. James Dobson doesn’t speak for me. He doesn’t speak for me when he uses religion as a wedge to divide; He doesn’t speak for me when he speaks as the final arbiter on the meaning of the Bible; James Dobson doesn’t speak for me when he uses the beliefs of others as a line of attack…

  1. you mentioned a couple posts ago about meeting folks from the bruderhof. here’s their new, swanky, official website:

    http://www.churchcommunities.org/

last summer i lived at the Woodcrest community for about four months, and actually was very close with the folks that came to PAPA. i would definitely recommend a visit to any of their communities. there are two in PA and about eight in New York, two in england, two in Germany, and three in Australia. if you’re thinking about anything communal, they’re the perfect starting point, learn as much as you can from them…then figure out what other forms of community apply best to your situations/region.

    peace brother,

  2. also, check out:

    http://www.plough.com/

for a wealth of free resources. the plough is a publishing company owned by the bruderhof, and while they don’t publish in the united states any longer, they’ve made all their books available for free online. if you like bound, paper printed books, check out Orbis publishing, the bruderhof has licensed some of their books to them.

for a good starting place in community focused reading, i would highly recommend beginning with Why We Live In Community by bruderhof founder Eberhard Arnold.

    again, peace,

    petz

  3. Really good/helpful stuff Alex. Thanks much.

  4. David, thanks for all the great links regarding the Dobson/Obama debacle. I’ve been “enjoying” them (not at all the right word), but haven’t commented as it seems (from your posts and your comments) that we see entirely eye-to-eye. You’ve even said something I’ve said myself, word for word. 🙂
