This is part two of this series of posts by some friends answering this question: In what ways does your faith in Christ impact how you think about and engage with the upcoming presidential election? See the introduction for more info. Also check out part one.
First off, I can’t vote since I’m not a US citizen. That doesn’t keep me from yapping about elections. What should keep me from yapping about elections is my faith in Christ because it is of far greater significance than the way I would vote (if I could). I have been in a Bible Study that asks you not to post political signs on your lawn so as to not repel your neighbors from Christ. I think we should be more inclined to post a sign supporting Christ rather than that of a political candidate.
Another point against advertising our political views is that we’re apt to be outspoken with them. Argumentative, divisive, derisive, polarizing, bellicose, and belligerent are various ways to describe us Christians who discuss our political views. These are not terms that are oft used for Christ, Himself.
Rather than taking my own advice above, my political views lean pretty far to the right and they’re guided there primarily because of abortion. I’m also guided there due to my wanting to keep my money rather than give it to the government. I would rather give money to social agencies and faith-based organizations of my choice than to the government to fritter it away. I know that my faith in Christ has guided my politics because before I came to Christ, my political views were to the left and certainly not near where they are today.
