a community serving opportunity

There will be an announcement in the bulletin next Sunday about a simple community serving opportunity coming up on August 3rd and 4th. This idea came from Lynn in the form of the following email from her sister. Thought I’d share it here.

suggestions please: obscure people

As I mentioned in a previous post, we’re about to start a new sermon series that uses lesser-known people from the Scriptures as a launching point. I’ve got preaching duty on 7/29 so I’m just beginning to prepare. There’s plenty of obscure folks in the Old Testament… and a few in the New Testament (how about Erastus or Quartus?). I’m intrigued with Priscilla and Aquila.

Before I get too deep into preparation I thought I’d throw it out to the readers of this blog… any ideas? Any obscure folks you’d like to learn more about? Anyone in the Scripture who has been intriguing to you but who you haven’t heard much about?

Leave any thoughts or suggestions in the comments of this post. All comments will be taken seriously… unless you suggest the horned dragon-like beast from Revelation 13. I might take a pass on that.

“the country” by billy collins

Are you familiar with Billy Collins, former US Poet Laureate? I’m not a big poetry guy, but I was recently introduced to his poems put to simple animation. I’ve got to admit, I like his stuff… probably because, unlike other poetry, I can mostly understand what he’s saying. Here is one called The Country.

fab team

I had the privilege of providing lunch for the Women’s Ministry team… best known for putting on the excellent FAB Friday events. The team spent the morning in the PCC conference room planning the entire 2007-08 ministry year. It was cool to hear the things they have planned… but far be it from me to spill the beans. Suffice it to say, I’m real thankful for this very high-capacity team and their desire to plan a mix of events that will both serve and challenge the PCC women. It’s going to be a great year for Women’s Ministry!

a new sermon series…

…begins on Sunday. This series will carry us mostly through the summer and is called Foolish, Forgotten, and Faithful. The idea is to look at some of the lesser-known people and stories from the Scriptures to see what God did through their lives. Ray’s kicking things off this Sunday with a dude I’d barely even heard of.

I’m looking forward to the next few weeks of the series.

Before barbecues and fireworks yesterday we went to see the new Disney/Pixar film, Ratatouille. Loved it! The story, the characters, the CG animation… everything was great. If you’ve not seen a preview or commercial for the film, the story follows a young Parisian rat who loves great food and wants to become a chef at one of Paris’ most famous restaurants. Here’s a little clip of how the animators made the food look so lifelike. I left the theater hungry so they must have succeeded.

independence day

I stopped by Home Depot a couple of days ago to buy a couple of hanging flower pots. The two I chose are planted with red, white, and blue flowers for Independence Day. They’re actually more like red, white, and purple so I think we can leave them up past the 4th. Or is that uncouth?
