ray’s random thoughts: honoring our volunteers

Friends,

HONOR – to direct applause toward those who deserve it.

Did anyone watch the MTV movie awards Sunday night? Ok. . .I didn’t either, but I read about them on Monday morning. Is it me, or do people in the entertainment business love to applaud themselves? Every other week it seems some award show is on TV as the Hollywood glamour crowd pays tribute to their own accomplishments. Part of me cringes at such behavior, yet at the same time, maybe we in the church go to the other extreme and rarely, if ever, acknowledge and applaud the efforts and accomplishments of our people. When it comes to recognizing and honoring others, could it be that somewhere in between never and constantly is a good healthy balance? I think there is.

In Roman 12:10, Paul encourages Christians with these words, “Honor one another above yourselves.” Interestingly enough, his comment directly follows instructions about serving one another through the use of our spiritual gifts.

This week we want to take time to honor and direct applause at those who deserve it – YOU! Over this past year, if you have used your talents, passions and gifts in some way to serve others, join us Sunday night [6:00pm] for a Volunteer Celebration. This gives our staff a chance to express thanks to all of you and for YOU to say thanks to others. There will be no Grammy, Oscar or Tony Awards and no celebrities will be present, but we’ll have some fun, and God [our biggest fan] will be there. A Chicago Jazz Trio, Vocal artist and worship leader Renée LeDesma, Staff Band, Videos and Ice Cream Sundaes will be part of the evening. Childcare is available. I would love to see you there.
