the junky car club

I think I just joined the coolest car club ever. Seriously.

The Junky Car Club is a car club whose members are learning to live with less so we can give more. We’re a bunch of happy drivers that are politely rebelling against consumerism by driving junky cars. We encourage our members to use their dough to support social justice causes instead of making fat car payments. Junky Car Club members sponsor kids who live in poverty through Compassion International and help other great organizations. We believe in environmental stewardship and hanging onto things a little longer.

This is so sweet. My 1998 Corolla with a peeling bumper just went up a few notches since it helped me get into the club. Actually, I think I am a “Chrome Member” according to the criteria:

Basic Membership
1. You are wanting to live with less so you can give more and looking for ways to be more generous to those in need.
2. You care about the issues of poverty and social justice and want to bring awareness to these important issues.

Chrome Membership
1. Your car is paid off and you have no car payments.
2. You are wanting to live with less so you can give more and looking for ways to be more generous to those in need.
3. You care about the issues of poverty and social justice and want to bring awareness to these important issues.

Elite Lemon Membership
1. You are currently sponsoring and helping a child who is living in poverty.
2. Your vehicle is 10 years old or older and MAY have trouble starting on cold mornings, have a funky smell inside, and have an annoying hum coming from the radio.
3. You are wanting to live with less so you can give more and looking for ways to be more generous to those in need.
4. You care about the issues of poverty and social justice and want to bring awareness to these important issues.

All I need to attain Elite Lemon Membership is point #2. Hey, now I’ve got something to work towards! And just in case you doubt the legitimacy of my membership into this exclusive club, here’s my photo evidence. Beautiful. The car that is.

I love the idea of being content with enough. There a lots of times when I want a new car… I’ve coveted the Mini Cooper more than a few times. But the reality is that by driving an older car, I don’t have to make payments. My 98 Toyota Corolla is more than enough for me.

Anyone else want to join the club? It takes about one minute… and I think there may be a bumper sticker for members. Just click here and you are on your way.

  1. Although I looked at this blog during the New Orleans trip, I really just spent time on it today and discovered what treasures it holds!

So although the posting is back from September, I was intrigued by the Junky Car club! We just donated our 1999 Plymouth Voyager (bought it used from my mom when my dad died) because it had 169,000 miles on it….and I was a little worried about driving it at night in Chicago (I go through some rough neighborhoods sometimes).

I was saddened that I had not heard about the Junky Car club before. But there is hope….Wendell’s car is also a 1999 and has 140,000 miles on it. So I know we would be eligible for Chrome membership. And it just reaffirmed for me what we could be doing with that money that we save….besides coveting another new car.

    Thanks for the site

  2. Thanks Theresa. Glad to hear you’re in the club. The sounds our car was making last night makes me wonder if I’m about to move up a level in the club.
