Here’s one thing Maggie and I have been trying to do: Get rid of plastic bags!

Plastic bags. . .Melissa and I ahve been trying to reduce the number of plastic bags we use, too. At most stores we try to take our canvas, reusable bags. Someday, you’ll ahve to ask Melissa about our trip to Wal-Mart when I forgot to bring the canvas bag in 🙂

It is really embarrassing when your husband walks out of Walmart with all h is purchases clutched to his chest – refusing to bring home a plastic bag. We have some nice canvas ones from Trader Joes and we just got a free reusable bag at Home Depot on Sunday. Now – I just have to train Jeff to bring them in everywhere:)

Great story. There have been a few times where we’ve brought too few of our canvas bags with us. Rather than succumb to the plastic bags we overload the canvas bags and stagger to the car looking… silly, I guess.

In 12 years of marriage, we’ve bought garbage bags once…and still have several left. We’ve used plastic grocery bags for garbage bags for over a decade. We put the plastic grocery bags to good use…bringing things to school, to work, to church. They are well used. I understand that Whole Foods is banning them completely. Only paper bags. Is that better? Granted, trees are a cash crop. Once chopped down, they’re re-planted so there’s no harm there. But what about the amount of chlorine used to process pulp to fabricate the brown paper bag. Have any of you seen the green chlorine clouds emanating from a pulp mill at 5:00AM? Have any of you had to evacuate a low lying area because the cloud comes wafting toward you and your co-workers? You just scramble to higher ground and wait for the wind to cause it to dissipate.
Now, kudos to you who bring the canvas bags and don’t even use paper. Personally, I’ll keep using plastic so I don’t have to buy garbage bags. Then, I’ll use paper and double bag the kitchen garbage pail so the mire doesn’t immediately soak through.
Do any of you buy garbage bags? If not, what do you use in your kitchen or at the curb? I think I’m being a good steward-both financially and with His creation…but open to learning more. -

Dang Keith… only buying garbage bags once! Impressive. We do buy bags for our kitchen trash. And even though we generally use canvas bags, I still find myself recycling plastic bags that I’ve accumulated. I recently read about biodegradable plastic bags, which seems like a helpful step… though they probably don’t help our dependence on oil.
