I watched the Sigur Ros documentary, Heima, with some friends a few weeks back. Gorgeous. I’ve been listening to their album Takk a bunch since seeing the film. Here’s one from that album, Hoppipolla.

At what point in life does it become wrong to splash in a puddle? At what point was knocking on a person’s door and running away considered boring or dumb? How about neighborhood fights? I remember the folks on Algonquin Avenue would “fight” the kids on Federal Avenue. No blood, no fists, perhaps some sticks and stones, perhaps some names, certainly some minor vandalism of their tree forts.
Sadly (?) we grow up and are too mature for most things we did as a kid.
The intriguing thing to me about this video is I look longingly at these senior citizens, wishing I could join them. But it’s not appropriate to do these things anymore. Here are a few others that I miss: swing sets, riding my bike in the rain, playing in the rain (at what point in life does rain melt us?), sliding in mud puddles, hitting pine tar bubbles with hammers so that it spurts into your friends hair, sleeping in backyard tents, swimming holes, sitting in snowbanks watching the stars, watching the stars anytime (light pollution is awful (www.darksky.org)), and spying on friends. What else is there? What else becomes “wrong” as we age. I’m sure there’s so much more.
