summer storm, chicago style

Anyone else in Chicagoland lose power from that impressive storm last night? We were on the way home as the center of the storm passed through Logan Square. I must say, my wife demonstrated some excellent driving skills in heavy traffic/torrential downpour. After mopping up water (left the windows open!) we lit candles and made the best of it.

It sounds like it could be a day or two before power is restored to everyone without electricity. After losing power (and water) from a similar storm last summer I’m beginning to think that this may be a yearly ritual for us.

Update…

Catherine has some photos and stories about the storm from her vantage point in the western suburbs.

Then, for about 30 seconds, the quality of the storm changed again. Having grown up where I did, I’m well trained in recognizing tornado signs and what to do if you are caught in one; I’ve had dozens of tornadoes almost-but-not-quite hit my house or neighborhood over the years. I’m not sure what actually happened last night, but something was very different about those 30 seconds.

Also, our friend the landlord called an hour ago to say that the power is still out.

  1. I spent the storm holed up with about 10 other people in a hallway at the O’Hare oasis over I-294. Perfect spot for shelter from a powerful storm – a glass and steel structure suspended over a highway 🙂 I was on my way to pick up my wife at the airport. We arrived at home finally last night to find what you did – no power. It does seem to be an August ritual 🙂
