jesus for president

On this election eve, I’m linking to a series of reviews for Out of Ur I wrote earlier this year on Jesus for President, the provocative book by Shane Claiborne and Chris Haw.  While preparing for yesterday’s sermon on Acts 2:14-39, I was reminded how dangerous and significant it was when the disciples claimed that only Jesus was Lord.  By making this claim they were also stating that Caesar, ruler of the known world, was not their lord.  Dangerous stuff.  Claiborne and Haw get the importance of Jesus’ lordship and are creative in how they unpack some of the implications for life in America today.

  1. Hello David. My name is Sarah Reed, and I’ve been reading your blog for a few months now but have yet to comment. However, I thought I just might on this one, since it was your review of Jesus for President that led me to your blog initially. I was looking for a fair and thoughtful review … one that wasn’t simply dismissive of Claiborne as unpractical but neither was uncritically all embracing of his views without discernment. I also noted your then association with Parkview, and after looking at their website was excited to add that to the list of churches I wanted to visit upon moving here. (I moved from Oklahoma this summer to begin grad school at Wheaton this fall.) I have found a real home at Parkview, especially among the 20 somethings and the Shelleys. Anyway, a few people have asked me why I initially visited, and I tell them about your review. It feels a little weird to explain to people, never having met you, so I thought I’d finally leave a comment. I’ve enjoyed your thoughtful analysis and integration of faith and culture, and I look forward to reading more!

  2. Thanks for leaving a comment Sarah. I’m glad you found PCC; it’s such a great church made up of amazing people.
