human trafficking in detroit

Maggie sent me a link to a press release from the Department of Justice about the recent conviction of a Detroit man on charges of enslaving women as exotic dancers. This is hard stuff to read, but is illuminating to how and why human trafficking happens in our country.

To force the women to keep working, Maksimenko and his partners took a number of steps, including confiscating the dancers’ passports; imposing large debts; isolating the dancers; threatening physical violence; searching the dancers’ apartments; and threatening to turn the dancers into authorities because of their illegal immigrant status.

On the positive side, the defendant was sentenced to 14 years in prison and ordered to pay his victims $1.5 million in restitution.
