On this blog I’ve made no secret of my love of reading.., click the library thing link on the sidebar for a partial list of my library. Yesterday I realized that I currently have 5 books going. I may have a problem. Perhaps someone will stage an intervention for me.

culturally-savy.jpgOne of the books on the pile is The Culturally Savvy Christian by Dick Staub. A couple weeks ago Dick was in town for a speaking deal and he graciously spent a couple hours over coffee with a couple of Parkview friends and me. Over the next couple of weeks I’m going to post some thoughts on this book and on that conversation. The book’s subtitle is A manifesto for deepening faith and enriching popular culture in an age of Christianity-lite. That one sentence captures the essence of Dick’s passion in the book and our conversation.

The book is divided into three chapters based on Dick’s central statement: The culturally savvy Christin is serious about faith, savvy about faith and culture, and skilled in relating the two. He then divides his 9 chapters into three sections with these headings, Savvy, Serious, and Skilled. In the three chapters under the first heading, Savvy, Dick reviews the landscape of American culture and the American church as he understands it. We’ll briefly look at those three chapters in the next post. Stay tuned.
