Eliot and I will soon be visiting my parents in New Jersey; Maggie is heading south to visit a brand-new nephew. They live across the river from New York City and I’m planning on spending a bit of time exploring. Where should we go? And maybe more importantly, where should we eat? I’ve done some of the touristy things in NYC so I’m more interested in stuff that’s off the beaten path. I have friends in the Bronx and Harlem who I’ll visit, so any suggestions in those neighborhoods (or is it boroughs?) would be great.
I hope you will let me know what you find out.
Momofuku Noodle Bar is a go to for me when I have friends visiting: http://www.momofuku.com/restaurants/noodle-bar/ get the pork buns for an appetizer. Not exactly the closest to Harlem, but it is pretty darn good.
The Burger Joint is also a pretty cool experience, this is a little closer to Harlem, but still a bit of a ride on the train: http://www.yelp.com/biz/burger-joint-new-york It is inside a pretty fancy hotel, and really doesn’t fit the building that surrounds it, but is a decent burger.
Not sure where you are going to be in the Bronx, but S&S might be worth the trip for a decent cheesecake: http://www.yelp.com/biz/s-and-s-cheesecake-bronx
There are also a couple of Pizza tours that are pretty cool. I did one with these guys: http://www.scottspizzatours.com/ A couple of friends and I did the crosstown pizza walk, and it was a fun trip… and a way to see a part of the city you wouldn’t see otherwise.
If you are looking for something different, let me know and I’d love to see if I can point you in the right direction… or if you have some spare time, I’d love to grab a meal with you while you are in town.
Thanks for this Matt. I definitely hope to eat some pizza while in the city. Not sure I’ll have time to meet up on this trip; maybe another time. Thanks!
Hi! I saw your entry title (and, I guess, your question) on Stanford Gibson’s blog, and wanted to say that if you visit Manhattan the High Line Park is kind of unique and fascinating. It’s a mile long section of the former high line train tracks redesigned as a long, thin park high in the air.
David, let’s do this! Sounds really interesting.
Thanks Joel. I’ve heard about this and would definitely like to check it out.
Original Chinatown Ice Cream Factory (http://www.chinatownicecreamfactory.com/)
If you like funky asian fruit flavors of ice cream this IS the place. Almond Cookie,
Egg Custard, Mango, Strawberry Shortcake, Black Sesame, Ginger, Red Bean, Taro, Cherry Pistachio, Green Tea, Salted Caramel, Zen Butter, Coconut, and Lychee. Last time I was up in NYC I went there 3 times…..in one day!
This sounds amazing!
If I was taking a little boy to NYC my one ABSOLUTE BEST thing to do would be a Circle Line Cruise!!!!!
