our first evening in dc

Our drive from Chicago to Washington DC went really well yesterday.  We had snow most of the way but not enough to slow us down.  (We did have one exciting moment looking for a cafe off the Pennsylvania Turnpike, but Michael’s expert driving skills kept us out of the ditch.)  After a couple hours of rest, we drove from our Baltimore hotel into DC for an incredible dinner at Georgia Brown’s.  Try not to be jealous, but I had the following for dinner: fried green tomatoes, corn muffins, fried chicken, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, collard greens and peach cobbler.  After dinner we walked by the White House and up to the Washington Monument.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

It was odd to see the Mall so empty knowing how many people will be congregating here over the next few days.  We plan on returning to the area this afternoon (if we can figure out public transit; many of the city streets are being shut down today) for some more exploring.

Yesterday Michael and I looked towards the Lincoln Memorial and tried to imagine what it would have been like to be there  during the March on Washington in 1963.  It’s impossible to know the feelings of standing among those crowds, listening to Dr King’s  now famous “I Have A Dream” speech.  Thinking about that day makes me all the more thankful to be here now.

  1. What an amazing adventure you are participating in. From our west coast, NPR informed world, it seems that everything is building to a wonderful climax tomorrow–but really the journey is continuing, isn’t it. As we salute Obama tomorrow and remember Martin Luther King today, we must remember that the freedom/equality/dignity/respect road started a long time ago with the greatest servant of all. They follow(ed) in His footprints–may we too! And, may you have a wonderful time joining the party tomorrow!
